Don’t Forget the Gospel at Christmas

“And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” – Luke 2:10

Every year we hear “don’t forget the reason for the season,” then someone makes you feel guilty for buying or getting presents. We stress about getting the right gifts for our families and we look for all the right deals. We make arrangements to go here and there all in the name of family and community with them. This is a wonderful time of year and also one that brings stress and anxiety to some and brings sadness to others. No matter your personal response to the Christmas season, there is one thing we cannot forget. That one thing is the Gospel. Jesus came to earth to glorify Himself by giving His life for sinners.

I want to draw your attention to a simple truth I’m sure you already know but should wow us every time we see it. Notice what the angel says to the shepherds : “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Here in Luke 2, we see that the angel is bringing good news. The same greek word is used here that is used for Gospel. The arrival of Jesus was the beginning of His work on earth that would bring us this amazing news, this beautiful Gospel.

While we shop and travel, and give and get, let us not forget the great Gospel that our Savior has given us. Preach it vocally and with your actions and use the opportunities we have during this season to be a conduit for the Gospel to be delivered to our friends and families. How much greater a gift is the Good news than trinkets that can be bought off the shelf.

Open your presents joyfully, give gifts joyfully, spend time with your family joyfully, have an amazing time celebrating the coming of the Christ child and don’t forget the Gospel this Christmas.

Merry Christmas,
